Santa Fe – Governor Bill Richardson today announced $17 million of state,
federal and private funds for southern New Mexico, including a $4
million investment of state dollars for 12 separate Colonias projects.
The Governor proposed the funding and worked with the Legislature to
secure the $4 million that will fund vital community projects.
“We are committed to ensuring that every New Mexican has access to clean water and the basic services needed to ensure their health and safety,” said Governor Richardson. “This successful partnership among local, state and federal officials is helping these border communities meet the needs of citizens and improve the quality of life.” The Governor created the Colonias Initiative in 2005 and has since invested more than $20 million in state funds for projects identified by local governments as critical infrastructure needs. Since 2005, money has gone towards the construction of water and wastewater infrastructure, roads, affordable housing, septic waste disposal systems, and drainage improvements.
