NM: Governor Richardson Announces $17 Million Investment to Continue Critical Water, Sewer, and Road Projects in Southern New Mexico Colonias

Santa Fe – Governor Bill Richardson today announced $17 million of state, federal and private funds for southern New Mexico, including a $4 million investment of state dollars for 12 separate Colonias projects. The Governor proposed the funding and worked with the Legislature to secure the $4 million that will fund vital community projects.

“We are committed to ensuring that every New Mexican has access to clean water and the basic services needed to ensure their health and safety,” said Governor Richardson. “This successful partnership among local, state and federal officials is helping these border communities meet the needs of citizens and improve the quality of life.”

The Governor created the Colonias Initiative in 2005 and has since invested more than $20 million in state funds for projects identified by local governments as critical infrastructure needs. Since 2005, money has gone towards the construction of water and wastewater infrastructure, roads, affordable housing, septic waste disposal systems, and drainage improvements.

Doña Ana County ($1,749,000)

  • $513,000 for the West Hatfield Mutual Domestic Water Consumers Association for constructing water transmission lines
  • $200,000 for constructing roads and improving drainage in Organ, NM
  • $500,000 for drainage and pavement improvements to Swannack Road
  • $536,000 for the Lower Rio Grande Mutual Domestic Water Association System for interconnection and infrastructure improvements

Hidalgo County ($785,000)

  • $592,000 for the Playas Training and Research Center for rehabilitating a septic lagoon
  • $150,000 for the Glen Acers Mutual Domestic Water Consumers Association for water system improvements
  • $43,000 for the Rodeo Mutual Domestic Water Consumers for water treatment
  • $143,000 for the city of Lordsburg for waste water reclamation Eddy County ($500,000)
  • $500,000 for improvements to the waste water treatment plant in the Village of Loving Catron County ($227,000)
  • $227,000 for solid waster transfer stations

Grant County ($303,000)

  • $303,000 for the Santa Clara Housing Authority for public housing roof repair

Luna County ($283,000)
• $283,000 for road improvements in the Keeler Farms colonia
