Governor Kathleen Sebelius today continued drought warnings and watches
for eleven Kansas counties.
“While rains this month have helped, many communities in southwest Kansas are still seeing a drought,” Sebelius said. “We’ll continue to watch this situation closely and take the necessary steps.” Sebelius has previously made drought declarations on June 11th for 13 counties. Those declarations were in effect for 60 days. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor is showing moderate to severe drought conditions continuing in southwest Kansas. Abnormally dry conditions are indicated in counties bordering this core drought area. This action was recommended by Tracy Streeter, director of the Kansas Water Office and chair of the Governor’s Drought Response Team and made via Executive Order 08-11, which can be found at http://www.governor.ks.gov/executive/Orders/default.htm. For more detailed information about current conditions, see the Kansas Climate Summary and Drought Report on the Kansas Water Office web site at http://www.kwo.org.
